Homeless runners want your shoes

Local runner Anne Mahlum takes her morning run every day in Center City and reports that she is "greeted with the smiles and applause of many of the guys who stay at the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission. Their warm welcome is as friendly and dependable as the sunrise and earlier this month I had an epiphany – why am I just waving and running by, why am I not taking them with me?"

After conversations with the staff and the residents of the shelter, Ms. Mahlum has announced that 12 residents of the Rescue Mission are now officially enrolled in the Sunday Breakfast Running Club. The program starts in mid-July, and Ms. Mahlum will be holding jogging sessions for the shelter three times a week. The members will be rewarded for the miles they run with incentives such as movie tickets, restaurant vouchers, department store gift certificates, etc.

Ms. Mahlum is asking that you give your old running/walking shoes new life by donating them to this program -- all sizes are needed, both men’s and women’s. And while you’re at it, if you have some decent shirts, shorts, socks and pants, she’ll take those too. Philadelphia Runner has offered their store as a drop-off location for shoes and running gear -- and as a way of saying thank you, they will give you $10 off a new pair of shoes when you donate your old ones. Philadelphia Runner is located at 1601 Sansom St, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

And if you don’t have shoes, or you just want to give more, please consider making a cash donation that will go toward purchasing the incentives for the members to reach mileage goals. Checks should be made payable to:
The Sunday Breakfast Running Club
1220 Buttonwoood St. #506
Philadelphia, PA 19123

For more information, call Ms. Mahlum at 267-455-6457.
